Nerding Out To Movement

I will always be a nerd at heart, and my venture into fitness has proved no different. Over the last couple of years, I've eagerly consumed articles and books about the fitness industry, marginalized communities and exercise, and studied the body and exercises. And my wonder and awe about what the body can do, and how movement can act as medicine, has only multiplied. And when I get excited about something I learn, I love to share it and spread the joy!

I've been known to wax poetically during personal training sessions about "the simple brilliance of an Alternating Superman" or "the powerful feel of a Knee Drive." When I learned about the Turkish Get-Up I was so impressed with the number of muscles and movements involved, but also how coordinating them all together and rising to the top of that thing made me feel like an Olympic athlete (I'm not, never will be). I was so excited about it that I showed anyone and everyone who would watch me drop to the floor and get up holding weight proudly over my head. Seriously, I dropped to the hallway floor at University to show my (amused) colleagues the day I mastered it. :-)

To keep sharing the joy of movement, I've started a series called Move It Monday where I (or the Feminist Fitness team) will share out a specific exercise each week to focus on. And, since one of the pillars of Feminist Fitness is empowerment through education, there will always be a little extra info in the short videos. We'll cover how to do it, but also why to do it and key tips about modifications and getting the most out of the movement. Try it out for a week and consider incorporating the move into your fitness routine!

Move It Monday will come out weekly with the newsletter, and on our social media so be sure to follow us on IG @the.movement.fitness or FB @The Movement: Feminist Fitness.
