Philosophy

Feminist Fitness

Keeping marginalized populations unwell, sick, tired, overstimulated, and weak is an effective way to keep them oppressed.

Get Strong. Fitness Is Feminist.

Feminist Fitness Philosophy

Body-Neutral

You're Already Perfect

Your body is already perfect. Feminist Fitness helps you enjoy that body through movement and music.

The "fitness industrial complex" works to convince us that we must look a certain way to feel good. But, you can feel good in whatever body you're in. You have the right to exercise, to find strength, and tap into the  emotional flow and release movement brings. So, take up space!

Empowering Music

Centering Women Artists

Feminist Fitness curates the music to promote women, gender diverse, and feminist musicians, especially those that are operating outside the mainstream music industry. Each class includes popular favorites, but also features musicians that are not "big stars," and we center the work of women of color.  We want to draw attention to the amazing and prolific work of the people on the margins making innovative and empowering music.

Fall In Love With Your Body

Pleasure-Positive

Feminist Fitness incorporates movement and sound to bring more pleasure and acceptance into our bodies.  So, we shake our butts in class (twerking encouraged!) and much of music is about empowerment.

Exercise changes how you feel in your body, which often translates to improved confidence and self-esteem.

How It Started

It may sounds dramatic, but music and movement saved my life. Back in 2020, in the midst of Covid 19, I entered perimenopause and got diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. My body and mind were in chaos, and out of despair, I tried some group fitness classes at my local Y.

Moving my body, pushing it to the beat of music, opened something in me.  I started listening to music again, taking all sorts of classes.  I discovered my body, and found pleasure and power again. I don't claim to be healed.  I'm not. But, I do feel more capable to face life.  Some days, I feel like I can take on the world!

One of the classes I loved most was "Cardio Drumming," and in 2024 I started putting fitness drumming to the feminist music I love, and Feminist Cardio Drumming was born.  After I taught my first class, I was hooked.  I decided to invest more and more time learning about exercise and the body.  I became a Certified Personal Trainer (through the National Academy of Sports Medicine) and a Certified Group Power instructor with MOSSA.

Through Feminist Fitness I hope to reach a connect with women, queers, crips, and all the other outsiders who feel overwhelmed and intimated by exercise; those that don't feel like they have a place in the gym.  Fitness is feminist. All bodies need exercise, and all bodies have the right to exercise.  My goal is to offer exercise programming and personal training that is body-neutral, fat positive, disability inclusive, gender affirming, and anti-racist.
